The Houston Texans are in the midst of contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud, who is asking for an annual salary of $70 million. The Texans, however, have proposed a range between $50 million and $55 million.

If Stroud's demand is met, it would set a new record for the highest annual salary for a quarterback in the NFL, exceeding the current mark of $64 million held by Patrick Mahomes. The Texans' offer, while still significant, would provide them with more financial flexibility compared to Stroud's request.

Stroud had a standout rookie season, earning the Offensive Rookie of the Year title and helping the Texans secure a playoff victory. However, his performance took a downturn, highlighted by a playoff game in 2025 where he threw four interceptions against the New England Patriots. This decline has made the upcoming 2026 season crucial for both his performance and the ongoing contract discussions.

From the Texans' perspective, agreeing to Stroud's $70 million request would be a considerable gamble due to his inconsistent recent performance. While he has the capability to warrant such a salary, the team must assess whether he has shown enough reliability to justify that level of financial commitment. As the negotiations progress, both sides are likely to encounter difficulties in reaching a resolution.
