In a surprising move, the Dallas Cowboys have announced that Sam Howell will start as quarterback in their preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. This decision was made just 90 minutes before the game, with Joe Milton set to play the entire second half.
Milton, who had been primarily taking second-team reps during training camp and was listed as the backup on the unofficial depth chart, appears to have not met expectations. Coach Brian Schottenheimer had previously indicated that the competition for the quarterback position was open, but Howell's selection as the starter indicates a shift in the team's evaluation of both players.
Howell has prior starting experience, having played 17 games in the 2023 season. He ranked among the top ten in big-time throw percentage, but also led in turnover-worthy plays. With the Cowboys aiming to solidify their backup quarterback situation ahead of the 2026 NFL season, owner Jerry Jones has shown a willingness to make trades or sign free agents to enhance the roster.
Howell's performance against Seattle will be closely watched as the team prepares for the regular season.
