BJ Edwards, who previously played for the SMU Mustangs, has decided to join the Oklahoma Sooners basketball team. This decision was reported by Joe Tipton of On3. Edwards is set to benefit from a five-for-five temporary injunction that allows him an additional season of eligibility due to the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards spent three seasons with SMU in Dallas, having initially committed to the University of Tennessee out of high school. After playing just 14 games at Tennessee, he transferred to SMU through the NCAA transfer portal. At SMU, he played under two different head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield, and consistently contributed to the team's success.
Last season marked his most successful year, where he participated in 28 games, averaging 12.7 points per game with a shooting percentage of 47.4%. He also recorded 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game, and his defensive skills earned him All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC.
Edwards averaged 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals per game in the 2025-2026 season.
Despite SMU's interest in keeping him, Edwards opted to play under head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners, who finished last season with a 21-16 record and missed the NCAA Tournament, view Edwards as a valuable addition to enhance their roster for the upcoming season.
