Tyler Goodson is joining the Dallas Cowboys’ backfield plans after the team waived Israel Abanikanda and kept the running back on its practice squad. The move came after Dallas released 2025 draft picks Phil Mafah and Jaydon Blue toward the end of training camp.
Goodson led the Atlanta Falcons in preseason rushing with 92 yards and scored on a 49-yard touchdown run. During three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, he gained 264 yards and scored once on 54 carries. He also had 19 receptions for 103 yards and one receiving touchdown.
Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson told Blogging The Boys’ RJ Ochoa that Goodson is an elite player who can cut across the field, contribute as a receiver and fill several offensive roles. Robinson said he wished Goodson had stayed with the Falcons.
Dallas is adding backfield depth following an injury to Malik Davis. The source said Goodson’s speed and receiving skills provide another option, but his opportunities to play appear limited. The Cowboys are preparing for Week 2 against the Washington Commanders after opening with a loss to the New York Giants.
Dallas had fewer than 100 rushing yards in that game, including 41 from Javonte Williams, and is retaining Goodson as roster insurance.
