The Dallas Cowboys have officially added veteran linebacker Von Miller, a native of DeSoto, Texas, who indicated he had discussions with the team before training camp began. Entering his 15th season in the NFL, Miller aims to strengthen the Cowboys' defense, particularly in pass protection, boasting a remarkable total of 138.5 career sacks, the highest among active players.
Miller's arrival intensifies competition at the edge rusher position, potentially endangering the roster spots of multiple players. He is expected to take on the role of left outside linebacker, a position currently held by Rashan Gary, who was acquired via trade this spring. Rookie Malachi Lawrence has also been training for this role under the guidance of defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
On the right side, Donovan Ezeiruaku, a second-year player, is anticipated to fill the right outside linebacker position, with James Houston likely playing a significant rotational role. This situation leaves limited opportunities for Sam Williams and Marist Liufau, who are vying for the same position and must prove their worth to secure a spot on the 53-man roster.
Liufau may possess trade value due to his potential as an inside linebacker with blitzing skills. Additionally, the Cowboys are considering players such as Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Adedayo Odeleye, with 17 practice squad slots available for promising candidates.
While Miller's signing is expected to have immediate implications for the edge rusher group, specifics regarding roster changes remain unclear.
