Opening Dominance Sets the Tone
Madison Booker anchored a dominant offensive performance, finishing with 24 points and five assists as the No. 6 Texas Longhorns defeated the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights 85-65 on Wednesday at Moody Center in Austin. The home team established an early lead that proved difficult for the visitors to overcome, with Texas outscoring Fairleigh Dickinson 30-8 in the first quarter.
Booker was instrumental in this early surge, contributing both scoring and playmaking as the Longhorns built a commanding cushion. Breya Cunningham also provided a significant presence on the glass, recording 13 rebounds to secure possession and limit second-chance opportunities for the Knights. The attendance at the venue reached 9,688, reflecting strong local support for the ranked team's season opener.
Mid-Game Adjustments
Although Fairleigh Dickinson managed to score 19 points in the second quarter, the deficit remained substantial. Texas maintained control of the game’s tempo, with Booker continuing to create scoring opportunities for herself and teammates. Reese Downey emerged as the leading scorer for the Knights, finishing with 17 points, but the team struggled to generate consistent offensive flow against the Longhorns’ defense.
Ophir Weintraub provided the Knights with five assists, attempting to orchestrate the attack, while Ane Valle contributed seven rebounds. Texas pulled away to a 44-24 lead at the half, having outscored Fairleigh Dickinson by 20 points in the first two quarters. The Longhorns’ ability to execute in the half-court offense was evident, as they limited turnovers and capitalized on key possessions.
