No. 13 Texas Tech is 3-0 after a 28-26 victory over No. 22 Houston in the teams’ Big 12 opener. The Red Raiders moved to 1-0 in conference play by stopping quarterback Conner Weigman and the Cougars near the goal line on a late possession.
Houston built a 10-0 advantage while Texas Tech’s offense and defense struggled. The Red Raiders’ defense was better after halftime and survived several lengthy Houston drives. Trey White made his Texas Tech debut after transferring from San Diego State and recovering from a knee injury. He sacked Weigman, while Adam Trick had two sacks. A.J. Holmes Jr., a returning All-American, also recorded a sack.
Brenden Jordan returned after missing the opening two games because of an internal rules violation. McGuire said White and Jordan were important as Texas Tech replaces defensive starters from the 2025 team who went to the NFL. He said White was not fully healthy and may have played more than planned.
Asked if the defense could equal the 2025 group, McGuire said, “Give me two more games.” He also said the team is “still finding ourselves” and should improve.
