The surge in data centers across North Texas is creating a significant demand for skilled electricians and HVAC technicians. This trend is particularly relevant for Gunter, located about 46 miles north of Dallas, as the region experiences a shortage of these essential workers.
According to a Texas Tribune analysis, at least 248 data centers are planned statewide, with 86 of those in North Texas. These facilities are known for their high energy consumption, contributing to a substantial increase in electricity demand. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has indicated that data centers represent the majority of new electricity requests, with projections suggesting that statewide demand could reach 368 gigawatts by 2032.
The Texas Workforce Commission anticipates a need for nearly 3,000 additional electricians in the Dallas, Tarrant, and North Central regions by 2032, reflecting a 15% increase in staffing levels. The competition for skilled labor has driven wages up, with workers on data-center projects earning approximately one-third more than their counterparts in traditional construction roles. Additionally, applications for construction apprenticeships have surged by over 70% nationwide since 2022.
