Ten years after Gunter won its first state football championship, the team that did it is being invited home.
Gunter ISD plans to recognize its 2016 state championship team on the field before the Tigers' game against Plainview on Friday, Oct. 9, according to the district's October newsletter. The district says every player and coach from that team is invited to come back for the ceremony. The game is a 7 p.m. home game, according to the team's published schedule.
The 2016 squad won the Class 3A Division II title. It started a run: the district's list credits Gunter with the same Class 3A Division II football title again in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024, five in all.
A list of 43 titles
The anniversary comes as the district works to document its history. In the same newsletter, Gunter ISD published a list it describes as a verified record of 43 championships and titles won at the state and national level, reaching from UIL academic slide rule wins in the early 1960s to a 2026 boys golf state championship.
Team titles on the list include Class A baseball in 1994 and Class AA baseball in 1998, robotics state championships in 1998 and 1999, a Beta Club state and national championship in 2002, the 2022 Class 3A volleyball state title, an FFA land judging national championship in 2018, and UIL spirit state championships for band chant in 2020, 2022 and 2024.
In 2023 the district won the UIL Lone Star Cup, which the list describes as the award to the top overall 3A academic and athletic program in Texas.
