Residents who want a say in how Gunter's parks grow have until noon Wednesday, Oct. 7, to apply for a seat on the city's Parks and Recreation Board.

The city posted the openings on its website. The board has seven members appointed by the City Council and works in an advisory role, making recommendations to the council and city staff on existing parks and recreation facilities, programs, plans for future parks and the purchase of new parkland.

Who can serve

Applicants must live inside the Gunter city limits or in the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ). Members serve two-year terms that are staggered so the whole board does not turn over at once. The board holds one meeting a month, on a Thursday at 6 p.m., at City Hall.

How to apply

Application forms are available by emailing the city secretary at citysecretary@ci.gunter.tx.us or by picking one up at City Hall, 105 N. Fourth St. The deadline for completed applications is noon on Oct. 7. Questions can go to City Secretary and Director of Administration Detra Gaines at 903-433-5185.

The council has already started planning how it will choose. Its Oct. 1 regular meeting agenda included an item to decide the process for interviewing Parks and Recreation Board applicants and to set a proposed timeline.
