Texas Tech’s men’s basketball team opened its first official practice of the 2026-27 season Tuesday with Jamichael Stillwell, Darrion Williams and Donovan Atwell still on the active roster. Each player has sought a temporary injunction connected to eligibility questions.
Atwell is coming off a season in which he made 45.8% of his 3-point attempts while taking a career-high 8.4 per game. He also earned honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition. Williams is returning after playing for NC State in 2025-26, following two seasons with Texas Tech and a role on the Red Raiders’ 2024-25 Elite Eight team.
Coach Grant McCasland said Williams eventually asked if the program would keep a scholarship available for him.
Williams is one of 31 players covered by a case that produced a temporary injunction allowing a fifth eligibility year. Stillwell and Atwell are pursuing additional seasons in separate cases. McCasland said Texas Tech will proceed with the players who are eligible and believes the roster can withstand changes.
He said the team was assembled around athleticism, competitiveness and experience, along with a commitment to winning and to one another. The season is scheduled to begin Nov. 2 at United Supermarkets Arena.
