The Houston Texans have announced they will cease contract discussions with quarterback C.J. Stroud after the regular season kicks off. General manager Nick Caserio indicated that if an agreement is not finalized before the team's opener against Buffalo on September 13, negotiations will be postponed until the next offseason.

Stroud, selected second overall in the 2023 draft, has had his fifth-year option exercised, ensuring his contract with the Texans runs through 2027. Caserio had previously mentioned the possibility of an extension prior to the season, but no deal is currently in progress.

At 24 years old, Stroud holds a record of 28 wins and 18 losses, leading the Texans to playoff appearances in each of his first three seasons. He was honored as the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and recorded a career-best completion percentage of 64% in 2025, contributing to a 12-5 season and a divisional playoff spot.

Despite this success, Stroud encountered difficulties in the playoffs, particularly with five interceptions in a 28-16 defeat to New England. No further information on future negotiations has been provided.
