Kevin Jennings, the starting quarterback for the SMU Mustangs, is anticipated to participate in the season opener against the Florida State Seminoles. This comes after he suffered a finger injury earlier this month when it was caught in a locker room door during fall camp.
Head coach Rhett Lashlee expressed optimism regarding Jennings' recovery, noting that the redshirt senior has started throwing again and is experiencing no pain. Lashlee mentioned that Jennings will have a full two weeks to prepare for the game, with the goal of him being at 100% by kickoff.
"Going well. No pain, and we are working him back in this week and expect him to have a full two weeks to get ready for game one and be 100%," Lashlee said. Reports from ESPN's Pete Thamel have confirmed Jennings' progress as he moves closer to returning.
The injury was not deemed serious, and Jennings' availability is considered crucial for SMU's performance this season. Last year, he recorded career highs, including 3,641 passing yards and 26 touchdowns, though he also led the ACC with 13 interceptions, indicating a need for improvement as the season approaches.
