This move follows the departure of their top two receivers from last season, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively recorded over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns before graduating.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, which has limited his ability to work with key offensive players. Despite this setback, Hale and Smith have shown promise in fall camp. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins highlighted Smith's knack for contested catches and praised Hale's speed and agility.
Hale, a former five-star recruit, faced challenges due to a serious knee injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season, but he has since regained his form at SMU. Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness as valuable assets for the team.
Smith brings over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from East Carolina, known for his aggressive playing style that complements the Mustangs' passing strategy.
As the team approaches the season opener against Florida State on September 7, they are focused on building chemistry and finalizing their roster. Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward remarked on the competitive spirit brought by Hale and Smith, which is expected to elevate the overall performance of the Mustangs' offense.
