The Dallas Cowboys are showing considerable advancements in their defensive capabilities, as noted by star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. He remarked on Wednesday that the team's progress is 'night and day' compared to last season, crediting the new coaching staff and a demanding training schedule.
Last season, the Cowboys faced challenges under former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, finishing at the bottom of the NFL in opponent passing yards and points allowed. They also ended up 30th in total yards given up and tied for 22nd in sacks. The defense had previously performed better under Dan Quinn, who has since taken the head coaching position with the Washington Commanders.
With Christian Parker stepping in as the new defensive coordinator, a shift in strategy and mindset has been observed. Williams emphasized that daily practices against a formidable offense have played a crucial role in their defensive evolution. He stated, "It's been amazing — from where we started off in OTAs to where we are at now," while recognizing that some areas still require improvement.
In August, the Cowboys extended Williams' contract for three years at $105.9 million, placing him among the highest-paid interior defensive linemen in the league. Last season, he achieved 2.5 sacks, forced three fumbles, recorded one interception, and made 53 combined tackles across 15 games, earning a strong overall grade from Pro Football Focus.
The Cowboys have also enhanced their defense with key signings, including safety Jalen Thompson and cornerback Cobie Durant, along with acquiring linebacker Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. They further strengthened their lineup in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Malachi Lawrence.
