Florida State coach Mike Norvell said the Seminoles are preparing for Saturday’s game at No. 10 Alabama in Tuscaloosa after Michael Alford was fired as athletic director. The team is 1-1 following its loss to SMU, a result Norvell called disappointing but not one that reduced his confidence in the program.
Norvell credited Alford and his wife, Laura, for their work with Florida State. Bruce Warwick will serve as interim athletic director, and Norvell said Warwick has extensive experience and should handle the role well. Players had Monday off, and Norvell planned to address the change with them Tuesday.
Florida State will lose freshman linebackers Izayia Williams and Daylen Green for the rest of the season. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson is expected back this year, though he will be sidelined for an extended stretch. Norvell said the absences may open roles for other defensive and special-teams players.
Norvell praised quarterback Ashton Daniels’ practice work and focus on controllable areas. He described Alabama’s defense as fast and explosive, with a bigger front than last season, and said Florida State must maintain offensive balance, win one-on-one matchups and create big plays. He also pointed to Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell’s ability to threaten defenses outside the pocket.
