SMU senior Enzo Panozzo received his first Atlantic Coast Conference weekly award after leading the Mustangs to a 1-0 victory over NC State. The conference announced Tuesday that he was selected as co-defensive player of the week with Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, captained SMU’s defense in the team’s ACC home opener and scored the only goal. The Mustangs limited NC State to eight shots, with two on target, while recording their fifth shutout of the season. SMU also earned its second conference weekly award this season.
The win moved the Mustangs to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. SMU is 7-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in ACC play. The team is scheduled to return to conference action Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
