The Dallas Cowboys have added Laken Tomlinson, an experienced guard, to their practice squad as they gear up for the start of the 2026 NFL season. This signing comes in response to the absence of Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith, who will be placed on injured reserve to begin the season.
Tomlinson, who was a first-round draft choice in 2015, has participated in 173 NFL games, making 162 starts with various teams such as the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, and Houston Texans. He played every game for the Seahawks in the 2024 season under head coach Mike Macdonald.
After spending last season with the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens, Tomlinson was not on any NFL roster since January 2025. His experience is expected to bolster the Cowboys' offensive line as they prepare for their opening game against the New York Giants.
Although it remains uncertain if Tomlinson will be activated for Week 1, the Cowboys may use him on game days due to current practice squad regulations. If he does not play, T.J. Bass is anticipated to fill in for Smith during his recovery, which is projected to last 4-6 weeks.
Tomlinson's accolades include being named a second-team All-Pro in 2023 and receiving a Pro Bowl nod in 2021 during his time with the 49ers.
