Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver at TCU, was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed, a concussion, and additional injuries stemming from an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident reportedly took place on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex.
Fields allegedly struck Ezukanma in the head while he was seated and focused on his phone, reportedly unhappy with Ezukanma's practice performance. Witnesses indicated that Fields then kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, leading to his loss of consciousness. Ezukanma later recounted to police that his memories were limited to being in the training room and inquiring about what had occurred.
After experiencing severe headaches and ringing in his ears, Ezukanma was taken to the hospital where scans confirmed a brain bleed, prompting his transfer to the ICU. He underwent several CT scans during his hospitalization, with one revealing an increase in the size of the hematoma. He was discharged on August 16, having also sustained a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields, who was removed from the team on August 18, surrendered to law enforcement and faces a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was released from Tarrant County Jail after posting a $50,000 bond. Following the incident, Fields sent a text to TCU police expressing regret, stating he made an emotional choice and offered to pay for Ezukanma's medical expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes addressed the situation after the team's season-opening defeat to UNC, emphasizing that the behavior was uncharacteristic for both the team and Fields. Ezukanma, a former student at Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver this season. TCU's next game is against Grambling on September 12.
