The Dallas Cowboys are in the process of reviewing their quarterback lineup as the NFL roster cut deadline approaches on August 30. The competition for the backup quarterback role behind Dak Prescott has intensified, with Sam Howell and Joe Milton both vying for the spot during the preseason.

Howell, who has played in 20 NFL games, starting 18 of them, may be at risk of being released in favor of Milton, who has reportedly shown strong performance in recent preseason outings. Analyst Ben Grimaldi from USA Today has indicated that Howell's position is uncertain, noting that Milton's recent successes have altered the competitive landscape.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer stated that Howell had initially been slightly ahead in the competition but acknowledged Milton's notable improvements. He remarked that the training camp competition is quite close, with Howell perhaps having a slight edge.

The Cowboys face a decision on whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, which complicates matters as retaining three could require cuts at other positions. Howell's contract, fully guaranteed at $2.5 million for the season, means that the team would still bear that expense if he were to be let go.

As the final week of training camp progresses, the Cowboys will finalize their decision, potentially influenced by their upcoming preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints. While some analysts suggest both Howell and Milton may remain, the competition continues to be fierce, and no final decision has been made yet.
