The Dallas Cowboys have announced the release of quarterback Joe Milton. This decision was made on Monday as the team sought to adjust their roster. Milton joined the Cowboys in April 2025 after a trade with the New England Patriots, which involved a fifth-round draft pick. He had been vying for the backup quarterback role against Sam Howell throughout the offseason.
Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys added running back Emari Demercado, who was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. This move required the team to let go of Milton to make space for Demercado on the 53-man roster.
During the preseason, Milton participated in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards, achieving three touchdowns without any interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for 14 yards, scoring one rushing touchdown. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the potential of both Milton and Howell as backup quarterbacks, noting the challenges of learning the team's intricate offensive system.
Milton expressed his growing comfort with the Cowboys' offense, highlighting his improved understanding of the playbook after a full season and another training camp. With his release, the Cowboys now have Dak Prescott and Sam Howell on their quarterback roster. Milton is subject to waivers, and if he is not claimed, he may have the chance to join the Cowboys' practice squad.
