The Dallas Cowboys have made changes to their roster in response to Pro Bowl guard Tyler Smith's thumb injury, which has placed him on the injured reserve list. Smith is expected to be out for four to six weeks, leading to the promotion of veteran interior lineman Nick Leverett from the practice squad to the active roster.
While Leverett joins the team, he is not expected to start immediately. T.J. Bass is anticipated to take over as the starting left guard, bringing experience with 10 career starts and knowledge of the team's offensive system.
Leverett, who began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent from Rice University in 2020, has previously played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, starting 10 games from 2021 to 2023, and has also been with the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals.
Additionally, the Cowboys have signed veteran offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson to their practice squad. Tomlinson, a former first-round pick in 2015 by the Detroit Lions, has an extensive career with 162 starts, including seven games last season with the Houston Texans. These roster adjustments come as the Cowboys look to maintain a strong offensive line as the season progresses.
