The Dallas Cowboys have announced the release of cornerback Josh Butler as they make significant adjustments to their roster. Butler, who joined the Cowboys in 2023 after playing in two spring football leagues, expressed both disappointment and pride in a social media post following the news.

During his time with the Cowboys, Butler highlighted his defensive achievements, stating that he never allowed a touchdown or a pass over 20 yards. He recorded six tackles in three preseason games and, over three seasons, amassed 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack. However, he missed the entire 2023 season due to an ACL injury sustained in 2024, limiting his participation in 2025.

Despite his solid performance, Butler faced tough competition for cornerback positions, leading to his release. The Cowboys have not dismissed the idea of bringing him back for their practice squad, as he has been a dependable depth player when healthy.

As the Cowboys continue to assess their roster, it remains unclear whether Butler will be claimed by another NFL team or return to the Cowboys in a different role. The organization is actively looking for ways to strengthen their lineup in pursuit of a Super Bowl victory in 2026.
