Head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith will be out for at least four weeks due to thumb surgery. In his place, T.J. Bass will take over, with Schottenheimer expressing confidence in Bass's capabilities.
Owner Jerry Jones has hinted at the possibility of a trade to enhance the team's defense. During his radio show, he mentioned that recent contract restructures have provided the Cowboys with significant cap space, stating, "We're in play" regarding potential trades.
The Cowboys restructured contracts for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland, and tight end Jake Ferguson, which resulted in $19 million in salary-cap room.
Jones noted that these financial adjustments could allow for a trade before the mid-season deadline, with the team's cap space potentially exceeding $33 million for the 2026 season. This flexibility opens avenues for acquiring players, including targets like Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby and Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks.
He also indicated that high draft picks could be on the table to enhance the roster immediately, stating, "A top pick is expendable this year for me to add to somebody that meaningfully would help us now." As the Cowboys prepare for the season, strengthening their defense remains a priority.
