The Dallas Cowboys have made significant roster changes, particularly in their running back lineup, opting to retain Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke. This decision led to the release of 2025 draft picks Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah.

Coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the difficulty of these decisions, recognizing both Blue and Mafah as valued players with potential. He highlighted Malik Davis's consistent performance as a key factor in the team's choices. Schottenheimer noted that Blue and Mafah may seek advice from Davis as they navigate their circumstances.

To enhance their roster, the Cowboys have acquired running back Emari Demercado after he was waived by Kansas City. Schottenheimer pointed out Demercado's versatility and special teams contributions as important reasons for this acquisition, along with the familiarity offensive coordinator Klayton Adams has with him from their time in Arizona.

The Cowboys have added 13 players to their practice squad, which includes running back Israel Abanikanda. An NFL team can have a maximum of 16 players on the practice squad, and the Cowboys have a special exemption for one additional player through the International Player Pathway program, which encompasses defensive tackle Dayo Odeleye.

Schottenheimer expressed confidence in the current running back group and the team's commitment to building a competitive roster.
