Tommy Castellanos’ place in Texas Tech’s offense remains under review after two games, with the veteran quarterback appearing in selected situations alongside starter Will Hammond. His work has included productive plays as well as a turnover.

Against Houston last Friday, Castellanos threw an interception on his first snap while trying to throw the pass away, according to Red Raiders Wire. He later came back into the contest near the goal line and ran 3 yards for a touchdown. Castellanos has three touchdowns this season and one interception.

Coach Joey McGuire said Hammond continues to hold the starting job, while Texas Tech will keep packages designed for Castellanos. Castellanos joined the team late in preseason camp as an emergency backup, after the transfer portal had closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation had concluded. Hammond is recovering from a torn ACL, according to the report.

Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ usage among 10 questions that could influence the college football season. Texas Tech has not determined how often Castellanos will play in the future or whether he will continue handling opportunities near the goal line.
