University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks was in court Monday as prosecutors reviewed two criminal cases. One involves an allegation of assault against a pregnant person, while the other stems from an August dispute in northwest Harris County that allegedly left a door handle damaged.
Nariah Harley, who is connected to the assault case, asked the judge to dismiss the charge. Harley said an argument occurred inside Brooks’ apartment last week and that Brooks lifted her and put her outside after repeatedly asking her to leave. She said Brooks called police because she would not leave, and that officers misunderstood what happened.
Harley said Brooks is the father of her baby and that she does not consider herself a victim. She asked for all charges to be dismissed.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body cameras recorded the encounter and that prosecutors will review the footage and a 911 call Brooks made. The second case involves another woman and her sister, who family members said grew up with Brooks and Harley in Killeen and attended high school with him. Harley attends Texas Southern University.
Brooks remains barred from football as the cases continue, Wasserstein said, and he hopes Brooks can attend classes. No further details were provided.
