Atlanta used a late 13-0 run to beat the San Antonio Spurs 123-116 in a preseason game Thursday night at Frost Bank Center, the Spurs' first exhibition of the fall.
San Antonio looked in control early. The Spurs scored 39 points in the first quarter, held Atlanta to 20 and built a lead that reached 23 points. The Hawks answered with a 42-point second quarter to trail 69-62 at halftime, and they were within 95-93 after three quarters.
How the lead got away
The fourth quarter was tied at 102 with 9:31 left. The teams traded baskets until Carter Bryant's two free throws put San Antonio ahead 109-108 with 6:01 to go. Atlanta then scored the next 13 points, and the Spurs got no closer than five the rest of the way.
Asa Newell drove most of that finish. The Hawks forward scored 11 of his 16 points in the final 5:49 and went 5 of 6 from the free-throw line in 14 minutes. Kingston Flemings added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting with five assists and three steals, and Dyson Daniels had 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
