Retired Air Force veterans Mark and Nancy Thomson marked the 250th anniversary of the United States with a historical presentation at First United Bank in Sherman. The couple utilized period costumes and readings to highlight the nation's founding principles during the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
Mark Thomson, dressed as Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, discussed the difficulties delegates encountered in the 1700s when separating from Great Britain and uniting the thirteen colonies. He emphasized the role of patriotism in maintaining national unity and noted the importance of understanding the origins of the country and the lessons found in its founding documents.
Nancy Thomson appeared in the role of Betsy Ross, the upholsterer and flag-maker associated with the creation of the American flag. She explained the significance of the flag as a symbol of unity and described how the American way of life serves as an example for other nations. She expressed pride in the progress made over centuries and the freedoms preserved through the actions of courageous leaders who sought independence.
The couple, who reside in Sherman, stated that their service to the community continues through their military background and their efforts to educate others about American history. They described the upcoming Fourth of July as a significant milestone for the country.
Sherman is located approximately 15 miles northeast of Gunter.
