Sherman is about 15 miles northeast of Gunter. The Oklahoma Transportation Department held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Roosevelt Bridge replacement on US-70 over Lake Texoma, a route used by more than 11,000 vehicles daily between southern Oklahoma, northern Texas and southern Arkansas.
The project is expected to cost more than $408 million and will replace the roughly 80-year-old bridge connecting Bryan and Marshall counties. Plans include a new four-lane bridge, improvements to the US-70 approaches, full shoulders, lighting and a pedestrian path. The Federal Highway Administration’s Bridge Investment Program is providing $124 million, with additional state and federal investment. The construction completion date was not provided.
ODOT held the event with its design-build team and federal, state, local and Tribal officials. Transportation Secretary and ODOT Executive Director Tim Gatz served as emcee. Federal Highway Administration Administrator Sean McMaster, U.S. Sen. James Lankford, state legislators, community members, and representatives of Zachry Construction and Traylor Bros. also attended.
Zachry Construction and Traylor Bros. are leading the team, which was selected through competitive procurement using a modified progressive design-build approach. ODOT plans to coordinate with local communities and regional partners during construction.
