Gunter City Manager Rick Chaffin stated that the town is facing a critical water supply issue driven by a combination of environmental and infrastructure factors. Chaffin described the situation as a "perfect storm" involving drought, extreme heat, and the failure of two wells.
In a direct statement regarding the severity of the crisis, Chaffin said, "We’re on the brink. We’re teetering. It’s a balancing act. It’s a 50/50 proposition." These remarks highlight the immediate pressure on the community's water resources.
The water supply concerns in Gunter coincide with other recent local developments. In December, all five members of the city council resigned. The departure followed a dispute over a railroad development that escalated into political conflict, broken trust, and conspiracy theories.
Separately, Gunter athletes recently concluded a high school football season. The team defeated Poth 42-7 in the UIL Class 3A Division II State Championship game. The match took place at AT&T Stadium on Thursday evening, ending Poth's historic campaign.
While the city deals with internal governance changes and water infrastructure challenges, broader Texas legislative issues continue to unfold. A state senator has proposed a bill that would impose fines on residents who file more than three environmental complaints to the state agency in a year if those complaints do not result in enforcement action.
