Two schools within the Gunter Independent School District have received the Purple Star Campus designation. This recognition is part of an initiative established by the Texas Education Agency to provide dedicated support and resources for students connected to the military.
The program is intended to create an environment where military families feel welcomed and their students are supported. According to the district, the designation goes beyond a simple title by offering specific assistance to families who may be relocating due to military orders.
Gunter Middle School Principal Sarah Claunch explained that military families often face challenges in becoming deeply integrated into a community because of frequent moves. She noted that the district aims to address this by quickly connecting arriving families with other students and staff members to foster a sense of belonging.
One example of the support provided involves pairing a student who is new to the area due to a mandatory transfer with a peer who is already familiar with the district. This approach is designed to help new students adjust to their new environment more smoothly.
