Gunter city council members convened Thursday evening to address two subjects that have drawn significant public attention: the placement of data centers and the operation of Flock license plate reader cameras. The discussion focused on how these technologies might impact local infrastructure and privacy, though no immediate policy changes were enacted.

Councilors examined various aspects of security protocols and business procedures related to both topics. The debate mirrors national conversations regarding the management of such systems and their integration into daily community life. Members expressed concern over how these facilities are constructed and designed, with some noting that controlling the aesthetic and structural elements could help mitigate neighborhood impacts.

Concerns were also raised regarding the security of Flock devices. One council member highlighted that unauthorized individuals have previously accessed data from similar systems. The speaker emphasized that these units collect extensive information beyond simple license plate numbers and noted that other law enforcement agencies may access the data, regardless of local custodians' intentions.

Gunter Police Chief Danny Jones addressed the council to defend the current deployment of the cameras. He stated that he does not intend to conceal the locations of the devices. Instead, he wants potential offenders to be aware of their presence in the city as a deterrent to criminal activity.

The meeting served primarily as a forum for discussion rather than a decision-making session. Council members did not vote on any new ordinances or operational changes during this gathering. It remains unclear when the council will revisit these issues or what specific regulations might be proposed in the future.
