A Second-Half Surge Changes the Tide
The Houston Cougars overcame an early two-touchdown deficit to secure a 27-17 victory over the visiting UCF Knights on Saturday at TDECU Stadium. The win improves Houston’s record to 4-1, while UCF falls to 3-2 in their respective standings.
Houston entered the contest as the home team but found themselves trailing significantly after the first half. The Knights struck first with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Keyone Jenkins to Josh Derry, followed by a Will Stone field goal to take a 10-0 lead into the locker room.
Houston failed to score in either of the opening quarters, relying on defense to keep the game within reach.
Weigman Leads the Comeback
The momentum shifted entirely in the third quarter as Conner Weigman emerged as the decisive factor for Houston. He accounted for two touchdowns via the ground, including a 19-yard run and a 1-yard plunge, cutting the deficit to 17-14 by the end of the period.
Weigman’s dual-threat capability kept the Knights’ defense off balance throughout the afternoon. He finished the game completing 18 of 33 passes for 239 yards. His rushing prowess was equally critical, as he added three more touchdown runs in the fourth quarter, including a pivotal 1-yard score that gave Houston its first lead at 21-17.
