Alex Alvarez provided the offensive spark Houston needed in the final frame, hitting a two-run home run to center field to cap a 10-8 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. Alvarez finished the day with two home runs, joining forces with a balanced offensive attack that overcame early deficits to secure the win at Daikin Park.
The Astros (44-47) improved their standing with the victory, while the Rays (52-34) fell short despite a strong performance from their lineup. The game drew an attendance of 37,457 fans to the Houston venue.
Early Home Runs Set the Tone
The game began with high power output from both sides. In the first inning, the Rays took a 1-0 lead when Wander Franco homered to left center. Houston responded immediately in the same inning, taking a 2-1 lead as Alvarez launched a two-run homer to left center, with Jose Altuve crossing the plate.
Tampa Bay reclaimed the lead in the second inning when Yandy Diaz homered to right center, driving in two runs to make it 3-2. The Rays extended their advantage in the third inning. Isaac Paredes hit a sacrifice fly to center to score one run, followed by a single from Jose Tatis Jr. that brought another runner home. A wild play in the field allowed a runner to score on a steal of home, pushing the Rays' lead to 6-2.
Houston began chipping away at the deficit in the fourth inning. A groundout brought a run home, and Diaz followed with a two-run homer to right center, narrowing the gap to 7-4. Alvarez added another run in the fifth inning with a single to left, making the score 7-5.
