Texas Leads Nation in Driverless Vehicle Testing, Promising Traffic Relief

A new study indicates that fully autonomous vehicles could reduce traffic delays in Dallas-Fort Worth by 33%.

A recent study from Southern Methodist University suggests that fully autonomous vehicles could decrease traffic delays in the Dallas-Fort Worth area by as much as 33 percent, without the need for additional highway lanes. This research is particularly relevant for Gunter, located just north of the bustling DFW metroplex.

The study, conducted by Khaled Abdelghany and supported by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, involved 25 experiments that simulated regional traffic conditions for the year 2045. Researchers tested various scenarios of vehicle adoption, including 100 percent, 50 percent, and 25 percent automation.

In the scenario where all vehicles were autonomous, traffic delays were reduced by up to 33 percent, while the time spent in congested traffic decreased by at least 19 percent.

The underlying principle is straightforward: human drivers often create traffic jams by braking inconsistently and maintaining uneven gaps, which causes disruptions that propagate through the traffic flow. According to Abdelghany, the coordinated driving patterns of autonomous vehicles could alleviate these issues.

In terms of current developments, Texas is already at the forefront of the autonomous vehicle industry. Aurora Innovation launched the first commercial driverless freight service in the U.S. between Dallas and Houston in April 2025. This service operates along the I-45 corridor, which is a major route for truck freight in Texas, transporting goods without a human driver on board.

In addition to Aurora, several companies such as Kodiak Robotics, Waymo Via, and Gatik are also advancing autonomous trucking operations in the state, establishing Texas as a key player in this emerging sector.

On the passenger side, Waymo has been offering a paid robotaxi service in Austin and expanded its operations to selected riders in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio in February 2026, with plans for broader availability by the end of the year.

While the growth of autonomous vehicles presents significant opportunities, it also raises questions about job displacement. However, industry experts suggest that the nature of work will evolve rather than simply vanish. Positions will still be necessary for vehicle maintenance, remote monitoring, and logistics support.

Estimates indicate that the autonomous vehicle sector could contribute approximately $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and generate around 9 million jobs globally by 2030.

It is important to note that the 33 percent reduction in traffic delays is based on a scenario of complete automation, which is not expected to occur in the near future. The study also highlights that as autonomous vehicle usage increases, it may lead to a decline in public transit ridership, which could counteract some of the anticipated congestion benefits.

Additionally, safety concerns regarding autonomous vehicles remain a topic of discussion.

To support the development of this technology, Texas has implemented regulations for driverless vehicles, requiring operators to obtain permits from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. These permits will be enforced starting in spring 2026.

As the state continues to expand its autonomous vehicle infrastructure, the actual impact on traffic and transportation will become clearer well before the year 2045. Observing how many autonomous trucks are deployed and how effectively they operate will provide valuable insights into the future of transportation in Texas.
